Special to The Courier-Journal
Another time when America was deeply divided comes to DVD this week. "North and South —
The Complete Collection" arrives in a five-disc set that includes "Heaven & Hell: North & South,
Book III," the 1994 miniseries sequel that has never been on video — DVD or VHS — before.
Patrick Swayze and James Read starred in the "Book" (1985), which won an Emmy. It was
based on Dayton, Ohio, writer John Jakes' best seller. Book II was broadcast in 1986. By the
time of the final sequel in 1994, Swayze and Kirstie Alley were big stars and didn't have time
for another TV miniseries. Read, who never became a big star, did return.
The goodies include six documentaries. In "Focusing On: An Epic Story," Jakes and producer
David Wolper talk about the miniseries. "The Hazards" is a conversation between Read and
Alley. Swayze discusses his role in "The Orrys." (Misprint should be "The Mains.")

North and South - The Complete Collection
October 5th, 2004
Patrick Swayze, David Carradine, Kirstie Alley. If contemporary partisan politics aren't quite vicious enough for
you, you can always revisit the Civil War. North and South, first aired as a miniseries on CBS in 1985, tells the
story of the conflict through portraying the lives of two families on either side of it. Put the stigmas surrounding
both the miniseries format and Patrick Swayze in the back of your mind, and you'll likely quite enjoy North and
South. The authenticity isn't all there, and you won't see Swayze get decapitated by a cannonball, but the story
is still compelling and some of the death scenes kick ass.
5 DVDs make up this set, covering the original series and its two sequels, as well as the bonus feature "The
History of North and South." Set aside a weekend for this one: the full set runs nearly 1,400 minutes.
