North and South (mini-series) - Don't want all three "books"? Here's one alternative!

Tomorrow (October 5th) sees the release of North and South - The Complete Collection: Books One, Two, & Three on DVD. This 5-disc set has
a list price of $69.98, and encompasses all three "books" in the series: 1985's North & South, 1986's North and South: Book II, and 1994's
Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III.
Some of our readers have expressed the notion that they really aren't interested in all three mini-series, even at the nice package deal that
Warner offers for this. Most of the people who say this seem to be interested in just the first two, but some of you only want the first one.
If you're one of the latter, then you're in luck! Warner has given the folks at Time-Life an exclusive deal to sell just the first mini-series, North &
South, direct via on-line or telephone order. It's a 2-Disc set with apparently just the episodes (extras seem to be left off), which sells for $29.99
plus shipping (and tax, if appropriate).
Our thanks to reader Craig Buehler for giving us the heads-up about this option. If this is for you, then click here to take advantage of the offer.
The website shows that this is "in stock" right now, so you shouldn't have to wait too long to get it.

A few days ago we told you that North and South - The Complete Collection: Books One, Two, & Three is on-the-way for an October 5th release. This
will contain:
1985's North & South
1986's North and South: Book II
1994's Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III
Now we have additional information from Warner Home Video's official announcement about the upcoming release:
This Emmy Award-winning powerful adaptation of John Jakes' best-seller tells the story of the turbulent events and emotions that ignited the Civil War.
In the tradition of Gone With The Wind, this glorious epic focuses on the lives of two families who are geographically and ideologically placed on
opposite sides of the war - The North and The South. The saga follows the families through their changing fortunes at home and the harsh realities of
the battlefields until the South surrenders and the families are reunited in friendship. In the final installment, the story of the two families continues
through Post-Civil War Reconstruction into pioneer Indian territories. Starring Patrick Swayze, David Carradine, George Brown, James Read, Kirstie
Alley, Philip Casnoff.
The 5-DVD set has a running time of 1392 minutes, and features a bonus documentary, "The History of North and South". In that documentary you'll
find these subjects:
Focusing on: An Epic Story: John Jakes and David Wolper discuss the story and mini-series
The Hazards: James Read and Kirstie Alley talk about their roles and the Hazard family
The Orry's (Should be the Main's): Patrick Swayze talks about his role.
A Time and Place: look at the period and the south
An Epic Production: Civil War recreations and the scope of production
Memories: final thoughts from cast and crew
The list price is $69.98 for this fabulous set with the classy-looking cover art:

Fans of North & South will be pleased with news we just received from Warner Bros; they will release North & South (1985), North and South: Book II
(1986) and Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III (1994) on DVD in a 5 disc set (1392 mins). Look for this set October 5th, for a suggested retail price
of $69.98. The set will feature a retrospective documentary, The History of North and South, featuring interviews with Patrick Swayze, David Wolper,
John Jakes and other cast members.
When we first heard about this back in May, we assumed that North & South would be released separately from Book II and Book III. It's great that
Warner is bringing out all three mini-series in one set at such an affordable price! We'll have more information when this becomes available, including
artwork for the set, so stay tuned

North and South II (mini-series) - The Civil War continues on DVD

A few days ago we told you about the upcoming DVD release of the hit 1985 mini-series, North and South: Book I. A year after its successful run, it was
followed up by a sequel mini-series.
The American Civil War continued in the second novel in John Jakes' bestselling series, and continued on television as well in North and South: Book II.
Returning stars Patrick Swayze, James Read, Kirstie Alley, David Carradine, Lesley-Anne Down, and Genie Francis were joined by Francis' future
husband Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Mary Crosby of Dallas fame, and former Hardy Boys star Parker Stevenson.
The best friends from West Point resume their clash as they each take different sides in one of the bloodiest chapters in American history. The 2nd
mini-series, we have learned, is coming to DVD in the not-too-distant future, and should be released around the same time as the first one.
The third mini-series, Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III, is also in production for DVD release around the same time. There were not as many fans
of John Jakes' 3rd novel in the series, nor of its television presentation, which dealt with the end of the war and its aftermath. But the final mini-series -
which reunites Read, Down, Francis, and Frakes, plus adds more star power such as Peter O'Toole, Rip Torn, Billy Dee Williams, Paul McCrane,
Mariette Hartley, and Cathy Lee Crosby - will join the first two on DVD. It looks like all three could make it before the end of the year.
Stay tuned for future announcements from Warner Brothers about these exciting releases!

North and South (mini-series) - What's that smell? Yankee perfume?

Kirstie Alley (Cheers), David Carradine (Kung Fu), Lesley-Anne Down (Dallas), and Genie Francis (General Hospital) co-star in the epic mini-series
from 1985: John Jakes' North And South.
Patrick Swayze stars as Orry Main, and James Read stars as George Hazard. One's from the South, and one's from the North. They meet on the way
to the West Point military academy, and become best friends. They have many adventures together, but must struggle with their different upbringings
in light of events that will soon lead to the American Civil War.
2 years and $25 Million in the making, the first North and South mini-series was directed by Richard T. Heffron, who the previous year had directed
another big mini-series: V: The Final Battle. The Civil War epic aired during November of 1985, and was a huge hit with the public, generating two
spin-off mini-series that were also based on John Jakes novels (1986's North & South: Book II, and 1994's Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III).
And now, finally, you can expect the original mini-series to appear on DVD before the end of this year. Warner Home Video has North and South: Book
I in-the-works right now for DVD release. There are no other details available yet, but stay tuned. We'll blow Reveille on our bugles just as soon as we
have more to tell you
